Ball-flowers

Popular in the early part of the 14th century, ball-flowers are architectural ornaments in shape of balls inserted in the cups of flowers. This photo, taken from the west side of Salisbury Cathedral while on a Tower Tour shows ball-flowers placed in rows. The distances from one ball-flower to another are the same. They are usually placed in the hollow of moldings. These ball- flowers are said to be the earliest known of its kind.
